Curtis’ film is a slow telling of a true story, with flashbacks more interesting than the central plot.
Years after fleeing persecution in WWII, Jewish Maria (Mirren), attempts to reclaim family art that was stolen by the Nazis.
Mirren is her usual tenacious self and Reynolds good as passionate young lawyer.
Among numerous legal scenes are fascinating flashbacks as Maria recalls a happy Austrian childhood, the Nazi occupation and her desperate escape to America.
Excluding flashbacks, the narrative is unexciting and the finale anticlimactic, despite a rousing oration by Reynolds.
Despite scarce touching moments WIG’s plot lacks excitement and energy.

I too found it interesting the need to cast an attractive hollywood star to play the male lead, and agree that he perhaps wasn’t the best choice. I disagree about the flashbacks though, although they may have been a ‘generic’ plot, the tension and pace made them much more exciting and interesting than that of the slow central narrative. T

I fell asleep during the flashbacks. To me they were very predictable and boring
