Hacksaw Ridge: Gritty Sentimentalism- 100 Word Review

In Gibson’s true story Hacksaw Ridge, Staunch Christian Desmond Doss (Garfield) enlists to fight in WW2, but refuses to kill. Initially criticised by fellow soldiers and superiors, his awe-inspiring heroics are inevitably praised by all.

HR’s beautifully shot with evocative sound effects in battle scenes. There’s many strong Australian performances, but the writing restricts characters into mere stereotypes. Garfield’s goofy determination, although fitting, gets annoying to watch. The first half lags with an unnecessary romance plot-point. The second is exhilarating overkill of gore, grit, and smack-in-your-face sentimentality.

However, despite the eye-rolling melodrama, HR’s gripping action and heartwarming heroics satisfies.

  2. Frankly, I thought Garfield was brilliant and I never grew tired of his character or the way he played Doss. However, I can see where you’re coming from with your criticism of the first half, but it worked for me.

  3. You offer many valid observations, some perhaps difficult to expand within a 100 word limit. Look forward to seeing more of your film writing as it develops.

  4. I like reviews like this. Enough for me to digest while on my break at work! I do still have high hopes for this one however so have to hope I disagree in some ways.
