For many women, “putting on a face” is so ingrained into their morning routine that they continued to do it despite lockdown and mask mandates, as it gave them a sense of normalcy. However, for me, the mask mandate was a welcome release from the obligation of daily makeup use.

11AM Pressers and the Comfort of the Live Event
Sydney is in lockdown again, and with lockdown comes the resurgence of zoom activities. Living alone, I have combatted the lockdown loneliness by doing all of my regular activities as usual, while being virtually accompanied by all my friends.
I Thought the World Was Big: Musings from an Australian in Europe
Growing up in Australia, I thought the world was big. Road trips from Canberra to Sydney lasted forever. Even a ninety-minute flight to the Gold Coast was momentous and exciting. And then, aged nine, I went to America. Surely planes can’t stay up this long? It felt like the pilot was mocking us. America can’t…
4 UNDERRATED CITIES TO VISIT ON YOUR NEXT EUROPE TRIP
When I say Europe, where do you think of? Probably London, Paris, Rome, Barcelona, Berlin etc. If you’ve been to any of these places, you might also be thinking of the thousands of people swarming the Eiffel Tower trying to get the perfect Instagram. Or the long line of people queuing for an overpriced London…
5 REASONS WHY MUSIC FESTIVALS ARE BETTER ALONE
Music festivals are crazy, awesome, messy places, where there’s no phone service and everyone’s usually a little bit drunk. While going with a group can be fun, keeping the group together while everyone tries to see different acts is near impossible, and trying to coordinate with lost friends can be massively stressful. So here I…
The Bittersweet Joy of Going Home
Leaving Dublin for the last time was a bittersweet moment. As I prepared to board the first of four planes that would eventually get me home to Australia, I felt a pang of sadness that surprised me. Looking at Dublin Airport fade away from my window seat, I was reminded of the first time I…
Hell or High Water- Black Comedy Road Movie with Heart: 100 Word Review
Hell or High Water is Thelma and Louise meets No Country for Old Men with a splash of Blues Brothers. Two brothers, part of the white trash underbelly of American society, rob a chain of banks, hunted by gruff yet canny retiring Texas Ranger (Bridges). Pine’s morally steadfast Toby adds complexity to the deplorable criminal…
Moana: Endearing Pacific Island Disney Flick- 100 Word Review
In Ancient Polynesia, bright-eyed future chief Moana sails out on a quest to save her dying island, accompanied by cheeky demigod Maui. The dialogue slightly overloads on the rhetoric of self empowerment and forging identity. Fortunately Manuel Miranda’s catchy music makes this cliched message easier to swallow. The storyline’s predictable and plods familiar territory in…
Fantastic Beasts Review: Visually Delightful Yet Messily Long- 100 World Review
FB&WTFT’s a visually delightful but messily long adventure in magical 1920s America. Rowling’s first screenplay attempts to compensate for the Potter hiatus through a crammed yet rambling follow–up. ‘Fantastic Beasts’ could’ve been a fun, succinct family adventure film. However, Scamander’s quest is convoluted by politically charged No-maj/ Wizard/ Grindewald tensions that clutter the plot line…
Hacksaw Ridge: Gritty Sentimentalism- 100 Word Review
In Gibson’s true story Hacksaw Ridge, Staunch Christian Desmond Doss (Garfield) enlists to fight in WW2, but refuses to kill. Initially criticised by fellow soldiers and superiors, his awe-inspiring heroics are inevitably praised by all. HR’s beautifully shot with evocative sound effects in battle scenes. There’s many strong Australian performances, but the writing restricts characters…
100 Word Review- Catch Me if You Can
Spielberg’s witty true story narrates conman Frank Abagnale Jr’s cheeky and fraudulent journey across various professions. Dicaprio shines as resourceful teen/professional liar/desperate criminal, hunted by FBI agent Hanratty (Hanks). This relationship is the film’s focus throughout their transnational game of Cat and Mouse. Initially fuelled by contempt and frustration, their affiliation grows into a father-son…
